On Sunday, October 16, 2011 the Phillips Family hosted the 46th Annual Atlantic United Methodist Church Dinner at Phillips’ Crab House, 21st Street and Philadelphia Avenue in Ocean City, MD.  This years fundraiser netted a total of $12,174!!! Thank you to everyone that volunteered to work and/or came to eat, and a massive THANK YOU for the continuing generosity of the Phillips family which is greatly appreciated by the church membership and is a financial blessing for AUMC and its many ministries.

It has been an annual tradition that Brice and Shirley Phillips provide their restaurant and staff for one Sunday each October to AUMC which uses this wonderful community event as a fundraising opportunity.  As usual, Phillips’ chefs cooked the meal, their staff did the dishes and AUMC members and their friends served the dinners.  The Phillips family graciously donated the food that was served so all funds collected during the dinner went directly to the church budget.  This event has realized proceeds in excess of $10,000 annually in the past.

The first AUMC dinner was provided by Mrs. Ethel Kelley in 1953 at the Beach Plaza Hotel, 13th Street and the Boardwalk.  Mrs. Kelley, mother of former Ocean City Mayor Harry Kelley and the original owner of the Beach Plaza Hotel, donated all proceeds from that event to AUMC.  Elwood & Mannie Fleming continued the tradition when they purchased the hotel in 1962.  Mr. & Mrs. Phillips have carried on this tradition since 1967 at both the hotel and, more recently, at Phillips’ Crab House on 21st Street and Philadelphia Avenue.

For those who did not have a chance to attend, dinner was served on the first level of Phillips’ Crab House from 12:00 noon until 6 p.m.  As they do each event, Phillips’ provided their famous vegetable crab soup, crab imperial, baked ham, fried chicken, dessert, beverages and all of the trimmings at a cost of only $20 for those 13 years and older.  Take-out was also available.  Children aged six to 12 were also welcome and were served baked ham, fried chicken, rolls and butter, dessert and a beverage for only $8; children five and under received only one entree (ham or chicken) at no charge.
